Tuneshine is designed in Oakland, CA by Tobias Butler and is assembled in Chicago, IL. Tuneshine special editions are assembled in Oakland by Tobias.
Tuneshine is designed to work with your music streaming service from any device. When you get your Tuneshine, you’ll use your Android or iOS device to connect to it with Bluetooth, so you can give it your Wi-Fi info and connect it to your account. You then use the app to log in to your favorite music service (or services) and the Tuneshine will automatically show music from those services while you listen on any device (computer, phone, smart speaker, etc). Once it’s set up, you don’t need to use the Tuneshine app—just play music like you normally would.
There is no subscription required to use Tuneshine. Connecting to your Spotify, Apple Music, or other supported accounts is free with the purchase of the device and will always be free.
There are certain more niche features that require more processing power on the server. In order to keep Tuneshine sustainable, these features require a Tuneshine VIP subscription of $1/month or $10/year is available. For now, this is limited to features that require multiple accounts on a Tuneshine, for example, if you’re sharing a Tuneshine with a friend.
Most new features added will be included for free with the base price of the device, but it’s possible that other resource-intensive features will require the Tuneshine VIP subscription in the future. At present, only about 10% of Tuneshine customers use the subscription, which is enough to pay for server costs and I don’t have any plans to increase that number.
Tuneshine supports last.fm, which may be compatible with your preferred music service. last.fm is an aggregator for all your music wherever you get it, and may help you use your Tuneshine even if your streaming service isn’t listed.
For more information, you can refer to guides for Tidal, Roon, Qobuz, YouTube Music, and many more via the Web Scrobbler plugin.
The LED panel used in the Tuneshine is rated for 100,000 hours of use—over 11 years. It can be slightly fragile expecially around the edges, so be careful not to drop it or hit it against anything hard. If you do break the LED panel, it can be replaced for a small fee.
Tuneshine optionally supports podcast artwork when listening to podcasts on Spotify.
